I’ve come to believe in the power of music to heal. And I mean this in many senses– the somatic power of self expression, the community support music fosters, the empowerment of reaching goals, the enrichment from a daily practice, the flow state of performance, the encouragement of weekly lessons, the deepened connection to history.
That list goes on and on.
For many, music holds a certain mystique or factor of intimidation. While I value a healthy respect for her power, more than that I value the essence of her purpose; to enrich life.
In teaching, I take a personalized approach for each and every student. For some this means learning to read music, and count rhythms. For others, it’s learning to offer self compassion to a frenetic mind, long enough to play one song.
Music lessons are not one size fits all. In my studio, I encourage self-regulated learning, body awareness, mindfulness, and I prioritize trauma informed approaches. The goal is to teach you how to teach yourself, and from that, share with you the empowerment that I’ve found in making music.

The Johnston & Hibbs Duo
The Johnston and Hibbs Duo formed in 2024, brought together by a desire to bring an authentic expression of spirituality to the concert stage. Inspired by the psychological journey of the Christian walk, Johnston and Hibbs integrate Biblical and Dantean themes with contemplative spirituality to both express and experience deep peace.
Inspired by the monastic practice of Lectio Divina, “divine reading,” the Johnston and Hibbs concert program is curated to encourage deep listening, meditation, and revery. Weaving together a diverse array of pieces both sacred and secular, the program offers a kaleidescopic glimpse into varying degrees of connection with God. With a goal of facilitating music as spiritual engagement rather than performance, the audience is invited to participate by deepening their own state of inner and outer awareness.
